You Got Skunked. Now What? How to Get Rid of Skunk Odor.

Skunk OdorSo maybe it wasn’t you that got skunked. Most likely it was your dog.  You were out enjoying a walk and all of a sudden, your dog zooms off and starts barking.

It doesn’t take long before you smell it. Skunk!

You hear of stories where some dogs just get a spritz of the pungent smell but not your dog. Your dog is an overachiever and comes back dripping in skunk odor. Not good. Not good at all.

The Tomato Juice Myth

You may have heard that tomato juice neutralizes skunk odor. Wrong!

You know when you hang out in a smelly place (think back to the smoke-filled bar days) for so long that you can’t smell the smell? Well that is what is happening in the whole tomato bath scenario.

The skunk’s odor is so overpowering that you simply get used to it after awhile. Taking a bath in tomato juice might leave you smelling like tomato juice but it didn’t neutralize the odor. Once the tomato juice wears of the skunk smell returns.

Skunk Odor Removal Recipe

The best way to get rid of skunk smells using household ingredients is a combination of :

  • Hydrogen Peroxide (1 quart)
  • Baking Soda (1/4 cup)
  • Liquid Soap (2 teaspoons)

You are going to want to use gloves and have plenty of towels on hand.

Or Simplify the process by grabbing some Stinky Pet. Lightly sprinkle all over your dog (and other pets too). Leave it on an hour and brush it out. Repeat again if needed.

Of course you will need to avoid getting it into their eyes and brushing it out is key! The product pulls moisture, as well as the odor. Brushing the product out is important so you don’t dry their skin out.

This is one product where more isn’t always better. The product needs air circulation to properly neutralize the odors. It’s 100% safe for the pets (and people too). So don’t freak out if your dog starts licking.

Now if you thought this through, you would of kept your dog outside while ridding him of the skunk odor. If he slid right by you and pounced through the house, you might want to also grab some All Surface Granules.

Lightly (key word lightly) sprinkle the All Surface Granules in the smelly areas and turn on a fan to get some air circulation. It’s the movement of the air that actually puts the product to work. Repeat daily.  Oh and by the way, it doesn’t have to be just skunk odor. Use it just to freshen up a musty house.

While you are at it, you might as well pick up some laundry additive to rid your clothes and the towels of the stinky skunk order. Wrestling and bathing a skunky dog has its drawbacks. You being skunked too is one of them.
